Race to break a world speed record chronicled in Great Big Story documentary
In August and September of 2017 a team of aviators, engineers and mechanics made their way to a private airport at a ranch in the Idaho mountains. This remote airstrip provided the ideal setting to challenge a world speed record that had stood for 30 years. Great Big Story was also on site to document this incredible attempt and their footage, combined with the aerial scenes captured by Pursuit Aviation’s JETCAM™ have been released as the short film Five Thirty Five.
The record in question - the fasted single piston-engine airplane in the world - was being challenged by pilot Steven Hinton who was flying a highly modified P-51 Mustang named Voodoo.
Pursuit Aviation joined the team on-site for more than two weeks while they prepped the plane and themselves for the record-setting run. The goal was to document the attempt, which would go down in aviation history, with the newly developed JETCAM. The JETCAM is a fighter jet trainer that has been uniquely modified to fly with a SHOTOVER F1 RUSH stabilized camera system. The camera system was developed in collaboration with SHOTOVER in order to give the entertainment and aerospace industries an innovative new approach to high-speed aerial cinematography.
Five Thirty Five debuted on Wednesday and captures the excitement and drama of this incredible challenge as it happened on the air and on the ground.
